Always Look on The Bright Side of Life

If you’ve heard the latest Podcast episode, you know I’m taking a medical leave for a few months for health reasons. I’ve had my diagnosis, chemo and radiation, recovery, and surgery prep over the last 4 months. We didn’t talk about it on the show. It gave me something fun and normal to do with my friends. Zip, Ed and Spike are all incredibly smart and kind… We’ve had some great conversations, with the kind of love, honesty, and integrity that’s not typical media fare.

As many of you know, I’m not fond of Social Networks, though I use them a bit, mostly to see friends, family, and get a few laughs. Talking about this on Facebook wouldn’t work for me, though I understand it’s a source of support for many others. (Using Facebook to send your friends here is perfectly ok with me, and if I’m honest… thank you).

So as I go through this next phase, I’m going to try and blog here as I can. Depending on how things are going, there may be some gaps between posts. This is for anyone who’s interested, and I’m inviting Zip, Ed, and Spike to throw up topics too. David Lee, our webmaster finally convinced me to enable comments… so you are all invited to this small soapbox. All I insist it that you please be nice to each other.

What will it be? We will see. Every week I look at what the narratives are, and try to imagine what we might be overlooking. I put that out there for discussion. That’s really my philosophy in a nutshell. Think for yourself. Empathetically hear many viewpoints. Challenge everything you are told, and be open minded and unafraid to change or be wrong. As many of you know, I’m wrong a lot.

And even though our audience size in this retirement improv poker game we’ve been having is modest… we are just crossing 500,000 plays since we started podcasting. There are about 3,000 people who listen weekly and you are all considered dear friends.

Thank you for being there.

One more thing. About my health. It’s serious. And there are three forks this journey can take. One may be brief, nuff said. The middle fork, and most likely, as I’m an excellent candidate for surgery, brings me back to a good quality of life for at least a few years. The third fork in this path has led me to two patients from the same medical team as me, alive and kicking in their 80’s. I ran into both by miraculous “accident”.

I am being cared for by one of the best surgical teams in the world, at Virginia Mason, in Seattle. In addition to top tier talent, they’ve got state of the art robotic assisted technology. Anyone who knows me knows that I love cool new tech.

Lastly, though I’m certainly no bible thumper, I’ve often shared my belief in a higher power (that’s a 12 step word for people who don’t want to push “God” on others). This experience has made me even more confident that loving each other is the answer to just about every difficulty we may face in this life, as individuals, families, communities, nations, and as all of civilization.

And we can’t get better by ridiculing each other, calling those we disagree with “stupid”, or dividing ourselves into groups that spend more time opposing enemies than looking for common ground. Not to mention that those particular behaviors are the most profitable tactics for algorithms that control much of our discourse. Tsk tsk. Let’s do better, in every moment we can be kinder.

So with that said, thanks for listening. Please know that any and all prayers are received with gratitude.

Bob Rivers.

Bob, Wow! I just read your blog posts about your health and surgery update. For some reason, I don’t always get the emailed versions and our wifi out here is nothing to brag about to be able to listen.
Anyway, I sure miss you guys! I was among your many listeners who enjoyed you every day on my way to work. It was a sad day when you left our airwaves up here in the PNW.
As for your health news today, Get up out of that bed and get moving! Keep up your positive attitude. Hugs to Lisa and the boys for supporting you during this time. Their love means so much during your challenging time. Of course, you know that!

Bob I went to the whole cancer thing back in 2011 fortunately mine did not require radiation. It was rough it was not fun. In my case 20 days in the hospital lost 51 lb and as of last September my doctor said he doesn’t need to see me anymore as all my tests have been clear. Keep a positive attitude as that helps you get through it.

    Sorry to hear that, Bob.
I’ve listened to you since, oh, I don’t know, the 1940’s or something – I know you were on all the “big” rock and roll stations here in the Seattle area – KISW, KZOK, KJR and it think maybe 86.5, whatever that was called.
My daughter even worked for you for a couple/few years!
Anyway, growing up in Seattle in the 60’s and 70’s, I participated in everything from the just-a-little-to-young-to-be-a-hippy life, through the ’70’s sex, drugs, and rock and roll years, acid rock, tried not to participate in the disco years by staying stoned, and then had kids and “grew up”.
Many of those years were spent listening to you. You, Spike, Joe, and all your characters and parodies (parody’s?) were a big part of my life! Heck, my wife and I even drove up to the Marysville Fred Meyer and had you guys sign some Twisted Tunes CD’s once!
Let me say I appreciate your choices regarding God – Everyone has their own views. That being said, six years ago I did decide to take up being a bit of a Jesus freak (1960’s flashback!). You can take it how you like, but I am praying for you, your family, and your care givers. You were a great part of my life, and I am going to do what I can to get God to say, “Man! This Dick Figgins guy won’t leave me alone! Okay, Fine! Heal up this Bob Rivers guy!”, or however that all works…
Thanks for all the memories, Bob.
I’m going to go listen to “Dirty Deeds Done With Sheep”!
    Have faith.

Oh Bob, I am so very sorry you have to experience this and my heart, positive thoughts and prayers go out you to and the family. Happy to hear you are coming back here for your healthcare, not to say anything bad about your doc’s back there. Y’know I felt “something was brewing” but I didn’t think it was cancer, I heard it in your voice. I thought you, Zip and Ed were tired of doing the show and you were going to hang it up.
You Bob are going to come through this with a whole new perspective on life; you are going to do everything the doctor’s and Lisa tells you to do, grumpy at times but that is what it takes to recover.
Positive healing thoughts your way from one of your long time Seattle listeners.

Long time listener, first time blog commenter. I’ve followed you ever since my husband (of 30+ years) introduced me to your show here in the Seattle area. Was bummed when you retired and then excited when I found the Bob, Spike, and Joe podcast. Listened to it until it went on hiatus. Through it I discovered the Bob and Zip show with Ed. Spent most of the last two years catching up on it while making the drive from Tacoma to either Moses Lake, Spokane, or Seattle once or twice a month. Was finally caught up about six months ago and content to listening while making my biweekly drive from Tacoma to Seattle. On my way home from Portland on Sunday I was listening to the current podcast and was absolutely gobsmacked when you announced the “news”.
Was grateful to hear that you and Lisa made the decision to come back to Seattle for a couple months and put your care in the hands of the VM Cancer team. They are amazing and you will be in my thoughts and that “Higher Power” willing you’ll be back on the air soon playing the devils advocate with the guys. God bless you and I’ll be co tent to read your blog posts (along with whatever Spike, Zip, Ed, and maybe even Joe have to say) and enjoy the comments that people will surely leave. If you don’t blog as much as you’d like that’s okay because you need to do what you need to do to kick cancers ass!

Bob I love you and am sorry you have to go through the dark journey of cancer. I lost my Dog Taz to Cancer in January. I have had many people go either way with cancer. People with great outlooks on life often beat the horrible disease. I did the Base to Space cancer climb at the Space Needle every year they had it and raised just over $1500 every year. I hate cancer so much that I did the climb with Pneumonia. 832 stairs in 10.17 minutes because i wanted to end the disease. I have been blessed with Amazing you men like yourself and my oldest has done the climb with me for three years. I love you and your family and your work family and wish you a speedy recovery my friend.

From my own personal experience and in June I’ll be a cancer survivor of 22 years myself. My belief is your mental state of mind is crucial to your fight and recovery. Having the best medical team, knowledge, love of your wife, family and friends is the second thing and the rest falls into the hands of a greater power.

Your kindness is genuine and sincere Bob. You will get through this because you have will and the power of positivity working for you and a message of love that you continue to share. In some ways, although I’m not religious myself I do believe in a creator, all of the beauty in the world abd the interconnections between nature could only have been created by something far greater than an accident. Some are here on this planet to teach and you have been chosen by the greatness of the universe as a voice to help in the healing of the world.

    Bob,
My mom was one of your biggest fans. You, Spike, and Joe brought her a few moments of fun and laughter on her daily commute downtown. These moments were hard to come by for a single mom trying to raise two crazy teenagers on a receptionist wage, while battling “the big C” and still managing to work full time. Years later, I took her to several of The Impalers shows, and she had a blast at every one. Finally the “big C” caught up to her after three plus decades of kicking its ass, and I lost my hero in 2014.
So when I found your pod it had special meaning for me. Listening to you and Spike go at each others throat has been like a warn blanket. 😉 Anyhow, you, Spike, and Joe brightened thousands of lives over the years….sometimes when they needed it most. I think it’s important to know that as you take on this fight. You’re in good hands here in Seattle. Keep em laughing!

We were stationed in Washington for 25 years and always looked forward to you and the guys making a Seattle commute bearable everyday. Thank you for that.
My mom is 85 years young , had a double mastectomy last year and is once again battling breat cancer HER2. She is fighting hard and keeping positive and staying busy sewing and knitting.

Attitude is everything, love is healing, laughing is a cure.

Stay strong and may God be with you and your family.

I have so many fond memories I don’t know where to start? I guess from the first time I was invited by Spike to attend a Twisted Tune session at Ironwood Studios. Sitting there in the control room as you tried time and time again to get the “perfect” take from the singer until I spoke up and said “I can crush that song”. You gave me a shot and the rest…well, thank you Bob. I owe so much of my radio career to you. I love you man.

So, get well my friend! I hope to hear your voice for many years to come.

    Hey, Biscuit!

Here’s a bit o’ blah blah blog for you, for what it is worth.

Ages ago, in the mid-90’s, I found you folks. On KZOK. I grew up in Wenatchee. Graduated in ‘85, and was in the Wenatchee Youth Circus for many years. Eventually went to work in the Forest Service, then at a 911 center (where Arik came and sat for a bit). I had been a Robin and Maynard fan, but didn’t know if your gang until the…. Time of Troubles?

All of that prologue is simply about making the connection between completely unconnected lives!

Anyway, listened every day in my office (had moved to an IT support position… not while taking 911 calls!). Turned out my wife had gone to school w/Downtown Joe! He was younger than her…. So he likely had a crush on her, and she had no clue he existed….. 😉

Met the gang in person near Christmas in the early (?) 90’s at the Fred Meyer in Issaquah during a meet-n-greet/signing of Christmas CD’s. As fate would have it, after I bought several CD’s and the team signed them, we chatted it up a bit and someone else walked off with my CD’s! Joe was (of course) the first, and only, one to jump up and help me try to find the perp! We failed, but we failed together!

But, you folks replaced them and signed them for me, and I still have them.

Point being: you and yours have been a beautiful part of my life for a long time (I still frequently break into renditions of many Twisted Tunes!), and I’m thankful for your place in my journey; both in humor, and in poignant discussions.

I personally believe we share a great many perspectives and beliefs. I certainly consider you a kindred soul!

Be well, brother. No reason to believe you’ll ever need me, but if you do, let me know and I’ll be there. I’m in Issaquah, and have vacation time I am happy to burn if needed, no questions asked.

From 99.9 to 102.5 and finally 95.7. When the pandemic shut down started, I stumbled on the podcast and literally haven’t missed an episode. I just finished this weeks a few moments ago. I’m very grateful for your consistent perspective, commentary, and advocating for the devil… he really needed your help.

But really, listening to Bob, Spike, and Joe, and then newer friends for the last couple years in Zip and Ed has been wonderful. Praying for a swift, complete recovery. Stay strong! Sorry Seattle is so dirty now!

Thankfully the part of Seattle where I’ll be having my surgery is squeaky clean! Thanks for hanging with us Andy.

Bob and BJ have been best friends and Trekkies for over 20 years. BJ is still bummed that 'The Bob Rivers Show - KZOK' beat 'BJ Shea - KISW' for "Star Trek walk-on roles for the Show Host and a Listener". Because I got to be on Star Trek. And he didn’t. I can't blame him. But had it not gone that way, we wouldn’t be having this insightful Podcast with Amy Ulen. Author, Teacher and so much more - Amy was the bonafide trekky and the lucky listener who joined me for the walk-on roles. Prepare for Warp Speed! Live long and prosper 🖖 [...]
